Psalm 45

1  My heart is astir with gracious words; ♦︎
as I make my song for the king,
my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
2  You are the fairest of men; ♦︎
full of grace are your lips,
for God has blest you for ever.
6  Your throne is God’s throne, for ever; ♦︎
the sceptre of your kingdom is the sceptre of righteousness.
7  You love righteousness and hate iniquity; ♦︎
therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
8  All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes and cassia; ♦︎
from ivory palaces the music of strings makes you glad.
9  Kings’ daughters are among your honourable women; ♦︎
at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

Hosea 3: 1-5

Further Assurances of God’s Redeeming Love

3The Lord said to me again, ‘Go, love a woman who has a lover and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the people of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.’ 2So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barley and a measure of wine.* 3And I said to her, ‘You must remain as mine for many days; you shall not play the whore, you shall not have intercourse with a man, nor I with you.’ 4For the Israelites shall remain many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim. 5Afterwards the Israelites shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; they shall come in awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.

John 18: 28-32

Jesus before Pilate

28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters.* It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters,* so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate went out to them and said, ‘What accusation do you bring against this man?’ 30They answered, ‘If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.’ 31Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.’ The Jews replied, ‘We are not permitted to put anyone to death.’ 32(This was to fulfil what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)
